In March of 2005, Jack and Jeanne McGeough were investigating the feasibility of moving their corporate business offices to Downtown St. Petersburg. After extensive research, they were informed of the availability of a funeral home left in disrepair. Jeanne had little interest in looking at it, but was convinced to do so for comparable pricing. When she walked into the dilapidated building she recognized the incredible architecture, but Jack wanted out as fast as possible. The magnitude of the restoration was overwhelming. Two hours later they purchased the building. Jack and Jeanne McGeough did extensive historical research at the St. Petersburg Museum of History and were able to locate photographs of the original building, its staff, automobiles and even the original artwork of the niches in what was the chapel area. With this connection to the Museum of History, they were able to reconstruct and restore the original integrity of the building, down to the artwork in the niches. Fifteen months later, Newport International moved its corporate headquarters into the main floor of the building, where the layout remains true to the original. The upper two floors have become elegant condos.
Beginning in 2007, the philanthropic partnership between the Museum of History and Newport International-Jack’s Catch seafood importers and distributors will help the Museum to fund additional educational programs for people of all ages.
