Proudly Sponsored by:

“The Optimist That Could Make Things Happen” Presented by: S.P.M.O.H. Board of Trustees at the St. Petersburg Museum of History
The ingenuity of Hubert Rutland Senior, within the Pinellas County banking industry in the mid 1960s through the 80s touched both the common person and the business entrepreneur alike. Organizations such as the Port of Manatee and countless others were created as a direct result of Mr. Rutland’s ability to see and meet the needs of emerging markets within the banking industry. Banks have a long history and have influenced economies and politics for centuries. from religious temples in 18th Century BC, to Christian prohibition for charging interest on money in the 2nd Century AD.
As the “Hubert Rutland the Man” exhibit takes center-stage in early 2007, at the St. Petersburg Museum of History, the local history of Florida’s most innovative banker will unfold before your very eyes! Despite never having finished grade school, Hubert Rutland had determination, a positive outlook and great work ethic that earned him the title of “St. Petersburg’s Most Successful Merchant.” Hubert Rutland Sr. founded three banks, that merged into the Rutland Bank. Rutland Bank was sold in 1986 for $72.5-million to Tampa's First Florida Banks Inc. Mr. Rutland took his marketing experience from running the family Department Store and used those skills to develop the Rutland bank. Mr. Rutland was a banker, rancher, clothier, family man and community friend. Hubert Rutland was a one of a kind person. His Firsts includes:
